UVA OneDrive Cloud Storage offers 1TB of storage space to students, faculty, and staff, allowing you to store and access your files from anywhere.

You can access your OneDrive account through the UVA website or the OneDrive app on your mobile device.

OneDrive integrates with Microsoft Office Online, making it easy to edit and share documents with others.

Files stored in OneDrive are automatically backed up and synced across all your devices.

Storage Options

At UVA, you have several storage options to choose from, depending on your needs. OneDrive for Business is available to faculty, staff, and students, providing 5 TBs of storage.

You can use OneDrive to store files securely, but keep in mind that group storage accounts may not work for projects containing data subject to data use agreements restricting access to certain named individuals. This is especially important for projects involving sensitive information.

UVA Box is another option, offering free cloud storage for up to 1 TB of non-sensitive/sensitive University files. This is a great choice for storing files securely, especially when you're working on a team project.

Here are some storage options to consider:

  • OneDrive (Microsoft 365) - 5 TBs of storage for faculty, staff, and students
  • Box (UVA Box) - free cloud storage for up to 1 TB of non-sensitive/sensitive University files
  • SharePoint (Microsoft 365) - store and share files, build websites, intranets, and dashboards
  • Research Data Storage - large-scale data storage for public, internal use, sensitive and highly sensitive data
  • Storage Home (ITS) - tiers of data storage for personal and non-research storage needs
  • Information Technology Services (ITS) Storage, Hosting & Servers - storage, server, cloud, and backup solutions for UVA researchers

Remember to consider your data's sensitivity levels and size when choosing a storage option, and make sure your system follows University Data Protection Standards requirements.

Setting Up Storage

Setting up storage is a crucial step in choosing the right storage option for your needs. External hard drives are a popular choice for storing large files, with capacities ranging from 500GB to 16TB.

A single 2TB external hard drive can store up to 400,000 photos or 200,000 songs. You can also consider cloud storage, which allows you to access your files from anywhere with an internet connection.

Cloud storage providers like Google Drive and Dropbox offer 15GB and 2GB of free storage, respectively. Cloud storage is ideal for collaboration and sharing files with others.

Cloud storage can be accessed through a web browser or mobile app, making it easy to access your files on the go.

Managing Storage Space

External hard drives are a popular option for expanding storage capacity, with some models offering up to 16TB of storage space.

They're also relatively affordable, with prices starting from around $100 for a 1TB drive.

A NAS (Network-Attached Storage) device can provide a centralized storage solution for multiple devices, allowing you to access files from anywhere on your network.

Some NAS devices come with built-in backup software, making it easy to set up automatic backups of your important files.

Cloud storage services like Google Drive and Dropbox offer flexible storage options, with plans starting from 15GB of free storage.

However, be aware that cloud storage can be slower than local storage options, especially if you have a lot of large files to upload.

External hard drives can be easily swapped in and out of a computer, making them a convenient option for transferring files between devices.

This can be especially useful if you have a lot of files to transfer, as it can save you time and effort.

Regularly cleaning up your storage space can help prevent clutter and make it easier to find the files you need.

This can be as simple as deleting unnecessary files and emptying the recycle bin.

Configuration

To configure your UVA OneDrive, start by going through the interactive setup following the instructions at this webpage. You'll need to choose "Microsoft OneDrive ('onedrive')" at 'Type of storage'.

You can leave client_id and client_secret empty. Next, choose "Microsoft Cloud Global" at "Choose national cloud region for OneDrive."

Choose default values to proceed. After the authorization code has been retrieved, you'll be given a choice to setup the config for your personal OneDrive or a shared library.

To setup the config for your personal OneDrive, choose "OneDrive Personal or Business" and follow the instructions in the interactive menu. To setup the config for a shared library, choose "Sharepoint site name or URL" and paste the URL of UVA's sharepoint with the name of the library.

The name of the library can be figured out by visiting the Team on Sharepoint and looking for the Copy Link button (possibly you need to enter a subdirectory before you can access the button). Follow the instructions in the interactive menu to complete the setup.

The configuration settings expire after a year, so you'll need to redo these steps.
