Linking Dropbox to Scrivener is a great way to keep your projects safe and easily accessible. You can set up automatic syncing to ensure that your files are always up to date.
To start, you'll need to have both Dropbox and Scrivener installed on your computer.
Dropbox is a cloud storage service that allows you to store and access your files from anywhere.
This means you can work on your project in Scrivener and have the changes synced to Dropbox instantly.
Setting Up Dropbox Sync
To set up Dropbox sync with Scrivener, you need to link your Dropbox account to Scrivener on your iOS device. This involves tapping the sync button and selecting Link Dropbox from the menu.
First, make sure you're viewing the Projects list in Scrivener and don't have a project open. Then, tap the sync button and follow the in-app instructions to grant Scrivener access to your Dropbox account.
If you have the Dropbox app installed on your device, it will be opened and you'll be asked to grant Scrivener permission to access your Dropbox account. If not, a sign-in form will appear inside Scrivener.
Once you've granted access, a Dropbox Settings panel will appear, asking you to choose a Dropbox folder. You can select the default Apps/Scrivener folder or choose another folder if you prefer.
To confirm that the link is established, note that only projects stored inside the selected folder will be synced. This means that the folder you choose should be dedicated to Scrivener projects to avoid unnecessary downloads.
Here's a step-by-step summary of the setup process:
- Tap the sync button in Scrivener.
- Select Link Dropbox from the menu.
- Grant Scrivener access to your Dropbox account.
- Choose a Dropbox folder to sync with Scrivener.
You're now ready to bring across some projects from the desktop version of Scrivener.
Using Dropbox with Scrivener
To set up Scrivener for iOS to sync with Dropbox, you need to link your Dropbox account. This is done by tapping the sync button, then tapping Link Dropbox in the menu that appears.
You can use any folder in Dropbox for syncing, but it's recommended to choose a dedicated folder for Scrivener projects. This will avoid unnecessary downloads and keep your files organized.
To set up Dropbox sync on your desktop, you'll need to install the Dropbox app and sign up through the download link. Then, you need to go through the install to choose a folder for everything and set up what you need.
You can sync your Scrivener files with Dropbox by clicking on the Scrivener menu option in the program and selecting for auto backups as well as where you want the sync to happen.
Having multiple backups is very useful, especially if you're working on a large project. Scrivener can automate the process of saving multiple backups to the Dropbox folder.
To set up multiple backups, you need to make a folder in Dropbox for Backups, then under the top menu Scrivener > Preferences > Backups > Backup Location, click "Choose" on the lower right and repoint the Backup location to your Dropbox backup folder.
Here's a summary of the steps to set up Dropbox sync:
- Tap the sync button in Scrivener for iOS
- Tap Link Dropbox in the menu that appears
- Choose a Dropbox folder for syncing
- Set up auto backups on your desktop
- Make a folder in Dropbox for Backups
- Repoint the Backup location to your Dropbox backup folder
Remember to always ensure that Dropbox on the desktop has finished syncing all files before trying to access projects on the desktop or syncing on the iOS version.
Understanding Dropbox Sync
Dropbox sync is a game-changer for Scrivener users. It allows you to save your text files with just a few button pushes, making it easier to create automatic backups through the Scrivener app.
To set up Dropbox sync, you need to link your Dropbox account with Scrivener. This is done by tapping the sync button in Scrivener, then tapping Link Dropbox in the menu that appears.
You'll be asked to grant Scrivener access to your Dropbox account. If you have the Dropbox app installed, it will open and guide you through the process. If not, a sign-in form will appear inside Scrivener.
Once Scrivener has access to your Dropbox account, you'll be able to choose a Dropbox folder to sync your projects. The default folder is Apps/Scrivener, but you can choose a different one if you prefer.
It's worth noting that only Scrivener projects will be recognized and accessible within Scrivener. The folder you choose should be dedicated to Scrivener projects to avoid unnecessary downloads.
Here are the steps to set up Dropbox sync in Scrivener:
- In Scrivener for iOS, make sure you are viewing the Projects list and that you do not have a project open.
- Tap the sync button.
- Tap Link Dropbox in the menu that appears.
- Grant Scrivener access to your Dropbox account.
- Choose a Dropbox folder to sync your projects.
By following these steps, you'll be able to use the Dropbox sync feature to save your text files and create automatic backups through Scrivener.
Backup and Security
Having multiple backups is very useful, and Scrivener can automate the process. You might even want to compare an old version of your project to the new version.
First, make a folder in Dropbox for Backups, like I've named mine "Scrivener Backups." Then, under the top menu Scrivener > Preferences > Backups > Backup Location, click "Choose" and repoint the Backup location to your Dropbox backup folder.
I back up "on open", in case I want to roll back to where I started. I back up "on close" to make sure I have a backup of the latest edits. And I "back up with each manual save", because in the event of power failure you could lose your most recent edits.
Notice that I don’t compress my backups as zip files. I don’t recommend compression unless you really are short on space. Dropbox might try to upload the file before it's done compressing and this can lead to a corrupted file.
You can use this process with other Cloud services, but I prefer Dropbox because it's easy, free, and secure. I've tried with Google Drive and Microsoft Drive, but both of those want to convert files to their format.
The Next Steps
Now that you've set up the Dropbox and Scrivener integration, it's time to start using it to its full potential.
To start, make sure you have the Scrivener Dropbox folder set as the default folder in Dropbox. This will ensure that any files you upload to Dropbox are automatically synced with Scrivener.
Next, consider creating a new folder in Dropbox specifically for your Scrivener project. This will help keep your files organized and make it easier to find the files you need.
You can also use the Dropbox integration to export your Scrivener project as a ZIP file, which can be easily shared with others or backed up to an external drive.
