Image and File Optimization
Optimizing your images is a simple yet effective way to improve your Shopify SEO. Images are an essential asset for every online store, and properly working with them can make a big difference.
You can optimize your images by compressing them, which helps reduce file sizes and improves loading times. Average product pages have around five or more images, and large files can slow down your product page's loading times. Compressing images to 3MB or smaller is a good rule of thumb.
Shopify already compresses images, but not to a massive extent, so it's best to optimize them before uploading. You can use tools like Crush.pics to compress and optimize your photos, or install an app from the Shopify App Store to help you with the task.
Adding alt text and good file names to your images is also crucial for SEO and web accessibility. Alt text should be descriptive and concise, including relevant keywords to improve visibility in search engine results. File names should be descriptive and include relevant keywords as well.
It's essential to follow best practices for accessibility when writing alt tags, ensuring they are descriptive and accurate and can be used by screen readers. You can use tools like Yoast SEO to remind you to add alt tags to your images.

You can choose the title, slug, and meta description, and see how your page will appear on both mobile and desktop devices. If you've already set a title and product SEO title templates in Shopify, Yoast SEO will override the original Shopify title with the Yoast SEO title template.
To set default templates for the SEO title and meta description for various content types, you can use the Search appearance section of the settings. This way, you can create a backup for your SEO title and meta description.
Here are the settings you can customize in the Search appearance section:
- SEO title: can consist of the product page's title, a separator, and the site title
- Meta description: describes what the page is about
You can also set a default site title and separator, as well as a site image, in the Site basics tab. This way, you'll have a backup for your site's appearance in search results.
Paragraph Length
Writing short and focused paragraphs is key to making your product page scannable and easy to digest.
Yoast SEO helps you achieve this by giving you a traffic light for product pages - an orange or red light appears if your paragraphs exceed the recommended maximum length of 100 words.
This is a crucial setting to check to ensure your product page is optimized for customers.
Settings
In the Search appearance feature, you can preview and edit the page snippet that will appear in search engines. This includes choosing the title, slug, and meta description, with previews available for both mobile and desktop.
You can also edit your snippet in Shopify, where Yoast SEO will override the original Shopify title with the Yoast SEO title template if you've set one up. If you've added a meta description in Shopify, it will appear in the Yoast SEO feedback, where you can check and edit it as needed.
If you've created a product template for your meta descriptions in the Yoast SEO Content settings, go to the Shopify editor and delete the description there. Then, return to the Yoast optimizing screen, and you'll see your template.

Bulk Editing
Bulk editing is a game-changer for streamlining your store's SEO. Yoast SEO for Shopify lets you export a CSV file with all your SEO metadata, making it easy to edit and import back in.
This feature is incredibly useful for making quick changes to multiple products at once. For example, if you need to update the meta descriptions for 50 products, you can export the data, make the changes in the CSV file, and then import it back into your store.
With bulk editing, you can save a ton of time and effort that would be spent individually editing each product.
Site Features
In the Site features tab, you can enable or disable certain site features.
The inclusive language analysis is one of these features, which is turned off by default.
You can also enable or disable Yoast AI in this tab.
