Drawing on Google Documents is a game-changer for anyone who wants to collaborate and share their ideas online. You can easily draw on Google Documents using the built-in drawing tools, which include a variety of shapes, lines, and colors.

To get started, you need to have a Google account and be logged in to Google Drive. From there, you can create a new document or open an existing one and click on the "Insert" menu to access the drawing tools.

Google Documents allows you to add multiple layers to your drawings, making it easy to edit and organize your work. This feature is especially useful for collaborative projects where multiple people need to contribute to the same document.

Drawing on Google Docs

To draw on Google Docs, click Insert > Drawing > +New. This will open the drawing tool, where you can choose from various line types to create your drawing.

The drawing tool is incredibly versatile and useful in many applications, but it isn't your average or typical drawing application. You can use it to sign a document in Google Docs, but for more complex images, you may want to use a third-party app.

To create a drawing, click the Line box to open a dropdown menu. From here, you can choose from various line types, including Line, Arrow, Elbow Connector, Curved Connector, Curve, Polyline, and Scribble.

These line types can be manipulated to create more complex shapes and designs. For example, you can use the Elbow Connector to create a stairs-like line with right angles that can be connected to other lines.

Once you've finished drawing, click the blue Save and Close button to save your drawing and insert it onto the page of the Google Doc. You can then move and manipulate your drawing as needed.

Here are the line types you can choose from in the drawing tool:

  • Line: inserts a straight line
  • Arrow: inserts an arrow
  • Elbow Connector: inserts a stairs-like line with right angles that can be manipulated to connect other lines
  • Curved Connector: inserts a smooth, curvy line that can be manipulated to connect other lines
  • Curve: inserts a curved line
  • Polyline: inserts a shape that consists of line segments
  • Scribble: inserts your own line freely

Note that on mobile devices, you can't create freehand drawings within the Google Docs app, but you can use the built-in markup tools to achieve a similar effect.

Using the Drawing Tool

You can access the drawing tool in Google Docs by navigating to Insert > Drawing > +New. This will open a new drawing window where you can create your desired drawings.

You can format your drawing by selecting it and choosing from options like Inline, Wrap text, Break text, Behind text, or In front of text. If you format it as Behind text, you can drag it anywhere on the page, and it will stay.

To insert a drawing from Google Drive, place your cursor where you want the drawing to appear in your document and select Insert > Drawing > From Drive. You can then select your drawing and choose whether to link to the source or insert it unlinked.

Here are the different types of lines you can draw with:

Drawing on Mobile Devices

Drawing on mobile devices is a bit more limited than on a computer, but you can still get creative. There's no direct way to create freehand drawings within the Google Docs mobile app.

To start drawing, locate the area where you want to add the drawing. Tap the edit icon, usually a pencil symbol, in the top right corner.

You'll find the "Pen" or "Highlighter" tool within the toolbar. Tap and hold that tool to start drawing on your document.

You can use this tool to draw lines, shapes, or even highlight specific parts of the text.

Built-in Features

You can create a drawing right in Google Docs if you plan to use it only within the document. The sketch won't be saved to Google Drive.

To access the drawing tool, navigate to Insert > Drawing in the menu and pick New. This will open the drawing tool in a pop-up window.

With the drawing tool, you can use the toolbar to pick lines, shapes, text, and images. You can also use the Actions menu to access tools like word art for fancy text and guides for lining up items.

To draw freehand, use the Line drop-down arrow in the toolbar to choose Scribble.
