OneDrive request files are a convenient way to share files with others, allowing them to request access to the file and track the progress of the request. To create a request file, you'll need to have permission to share the file with others.
You can create a request file from the OneDrive website or mobile app. From the OneDrive website, click on the file you want to share and select the "Get a link" option, then choose the "Request access" option.
The person requesting access will receive an email with a link to the file and a request form to fill out. They'll need to enter their name and email address, and optionally, a message to the file owner.
The file owner will receive an email notification with the request details, including the person's name and email address, and any message they may have included.
What Is Cloud Storage?
Cloud storage is a way to store and access your files from anywhere, without having to worry about running out of space on your device. It's like having a digital file cabinet that's accessible from any computer or mobile device.
You can access your files from anywhere, as long as you have an internet connection. This is especially useful when working with others, as you can share files and collaborate on projects without having to physically be in the same location.
OneDrive is a popular cloud storage service that allows you to store and share files with others. With OneDrive, you can create a folder and share it with others, who can then upload files to that folder.
Here are the benefits of using a cloud storage service like OneDrive:
- Anyone can send you files (they don't need to have OneDrive)
- Easier to manage: All files sent to you are saved in a single folder of your choice
- The security of the files is guaranteed: People who respond to your request can only upload files, they do not have viewing or editing permissions to your OneDrive
By using a cloud storage service, you can free up space on your device and access your files from anywhere. This can be especially helpful when working on large projects or collaborating with others.
Creating a Guide
To create a file request in OneDrive, you need to follow a few simple steps. First, go to your OneDrive account and select the folder where you want to request files.
Under "What files are you requesting", enter a descriptive name for the file you requested from someone else. This description will be seen by the person receiving the file request.
You can select "Copy link" to copy the file request link and send it to anyone you want to request the file from. Alternatively, you can enter the email address or address of the person you want to request the file from.
If you want to edit the descriptive name of the file request, select the folder, select "Request files" again, and change the name. The person you send the request to will see the new name when the file is uploaded.
You will receive a notification email whenever someone uploads a file to your file request folder. This feature has been available since December 2019, allowing you to request files from others directly in OneDrive.
Uploading and Enabling
To upload files to a OneDrive file request folder, your colleagues will need to click the "Select files" button, browse to the appropriate folder, select the requested file, and then choose "Upload". This will display a notification of successful upload.
You can enable the file request feature in OneDrive and SharePoint by meeting the prerequisites, including having a valid work or school OneDrive account and setting SharePoint Online tenant level sharing setting to "Anyone" in SharePoint Admin Center.
To enable the Request Files feature, you can also use PowerShell, but first, you need to meet the prerequisites, including having a valid work or school OneDrive account and setting SharePoint Online tenant level sharing setting to "Anyone" in SharePoint Admin Center.
Here are the prerequisites to enable the Request Files feature:
- You must have a valid work or school OneDrive account
- Your SharePoint Online tenant level sharing setting is set to “Anyone” in SharePoint Admin Center (it doesn’t matter whatever is set for OneDrive level!)
- On the “Advanced Settings” for anyone links, You set “View, edit, and upload” permissions for Folders.
- last but not least: You are not restricted to sharing with External users (Allow only members in specific security groups).
How to Upload
Uploading files to a OneDrive file request folder is a straightforward process.
To start, your colleagues need to click the "Select files" button.
After selecting the requested file, they can choose "Upload".
A notification of successful upload is displayed after the file has been uploaded successfully.
If they need to add other files, they can select the "Upload more" button.
Here are the steps to upload files to a OneDrive file request folder:
- Click the "Select files" button.
- Select the requested file and choose "Upload".
- A notification of successful upload is displayed.
- Select the "Upload more" button to add other files.
Alternatively, you can use MultCloud to upload files to a OneDrive file request folder.
To do this, you need to select "OneDrive" or "OneDrive for Business" and allow MultCloud to access your account.
After that, you can open your OneDrive account in MultCloud and tick the folder where you want to save the uploaded file.
Then, click "Share" in the upper function bar and select the sharing mode you want.
Click "Create Share" and copy the link to the file you want to request.
Your recipients can then upload the files and folders you need to the file request folder.
How to Enable?
To enable the File Request feature in OneDrive and SharePoint, you need to meet certain prerequisites. You must have a valid work or school OneDrive account, and your SharePoint Online tenant level sharing setting must be set to "Anyone" in the SharePoint Admin Center.
To check if you meet the prerequisites, refer to the following list:
- You must have a valid work or school OneDrive account
- Your SharePoint Online tenant level sharing setting is set to “Anyone” in SharePoint Admin Center
- You set “View, edit, and upload” permissions for Folders in the “Advanced Settings” for anyone links
- You are not restricted to sharing with External users (Allow only members in specific security groups)
If you don't find the Request files option, you can check and enable the feature using PowerShell. To do this, you need to run a specific command, which is: `Set-SPOTenant — OneDriveRequestFilesLinkExpirationInDays`. This command will enable the Request Files feature and allow you to set the link expiration in days.
Alternatively, you can use MultCloud to enable the File Request feature. To do this, you need to create a MultCloud account, select the OneDrive or OneDrive for Business option, and allow MultCloud to access your account. Then, you can open your OneDrive account in MultCloud, tick the folder where you want to save the uploaded file, and click "Share".
Using OneDrive
To access the OneDrive Request Files feature, log in to your OneDrive for Business site at https://YourDomain-my.sharepoint.com/.
You can find the "Request files" button in the toolbar, or by selecting a folder and using the context menu. This feature allows you to select a folder and permit others to upload files to that folder.
Anyone can send you files without needing to have OneDrive, making it easy for collaborators to send you content.
You can create a new file request by entering a descriptive name for the file request, such as "Project Proposals."
The recipient of the link can only upload files anonymously through any device, and they can't see any existing files in the folder.
The uploaded files will have the user's first and last name as a prefix in the filename, for example, "Jack_Curie_Proposal_Documents."
You'll receive a notification email when someone uploads a file, and you can review, download, or move them in the file request folder as needed.
Here are the benefits of using OneDrive Request Files:
- Simplified File Collection: Collect files from others without the hassle of email attachments or manual file transfers.
- Secure and Controlled Access: Share the request link with specific individuals or groups to ensure only authorized persons can contribute files.
- Centralized File Management: Store all uploaded files in one central location within your OneDrive.
- Automated Notifications: Receive notifications when someone uploads a file to your request folder.
- Seamless Collaboration: Share collected files with others, collaborate on them in real-time, and integrate them into your workflow using other Microsoft 365 tools.
Advanced Features
The OneDrive Request Files feature is a powerful tool that simplifies the process of collecting files from others. It allows you to create a dedicated folder where others can upload files directly to your OneDrive.
To enable this feature, you need to be using OneDrive for work or school accounts, and you must enable Anyone links for SharePoint. You can do this in the External Sharing section of your SharePoint Admin Center or using a PowerShell command.
The Request Files feature can be set to expire by using a PowerShell command, so you can control how long the link is active. This can be useful if you're working on a project with a deadline.
You can also enable the Request Files feature per site by ensuring that Anyone links are enabled at the tenant level for SharePoint sites. Then, you can run a command to check if RequestFilesLinkEnabled is set to True.
Once you've enabled the Request Files feature, you can create a file request by selecting a folder and clicking "Request Files." You'll then be prompted to enter a descriptive name for the files and copy the link to the request or send it to others via email.
